Assessed learning outcomes:


A) Identify a specific project area for investigation that is relevant to current health and social care practice;
B) Identify, select, justify and critique the use of appropriate techniques, methods and strategies to gather relevant data and evidence to investigate the project topic;
C) Critically appraise and evaluate the evidence in relation to the project topic, to draw relevant conclusions identifying an area for enhancement within practice;
D) Present and discuss research findings, justifying their relevance in shaping or advancing current health and social care practice within the scope of the topic;
E) Critically evaluate evidence to justify and support conclusions/ recommendations;
F) Communicate and argue information professionally and emphatically via written format appropriate for the purpose and chosen topic.

Assessment Guidance:

The Research Report must follow the suggested structure/sub-headings and an indicative word
count has been provided.


a) Abstract (150 words not included in the overall word count) You should provide a succinct overview of your research project.
b) Introduction (1000 words)
This section should include the aims of the project and your research question (the focus of the
research project).
For this section you should provide an overview of the background/context of your project and
provide a justification for why it is important to research this area.

c) Methods (1000 words)
You should provide an overview of the methods used to collect and evaluate literature. You should
consider databases used and the key words used within your search strategy. You should also
explain how and why you have chosen key literature, inclusion/exclusion criteria/ evaluative tools.
Identify strengths and limitations of chosen methods and techniques employed to gather data.
d) Findings (1000 words)
For this section you should provide a critical review of relevant literature identified in the methods
section. You should establish key themes/issues across the data, identify controversies that exist
about the topic, and what the implications of the literature are for your own research.
e) Analysis (1000 words)
For this section, provide an analysis of the approaches identified in the literature review and
examine the strengths and limitations of these approaches and the impact this has on services.
Explain what is successful/not successful about these approaches.
f) Conclusion (500 words)
You should provide a conclusion summarising the overall aims of the research report and suggest,
based on your research, what approaches are most effective and why.
g) Recommendations (500 words)
